not a good idea at all most pits are just scary by being a pit to some ppl. if u don't train any dog right to do something like this you could be on the news...and not for a good thing! U could make an aggressive dog to everyone. keep ur dog on a leash and most dog want o protect you should u feel threatened..never let the dog chase someone...they could get bit and ur dog could get put down..then how would u feel? his barking should work in scaring anyone off that would want to mess with you.

The definitive answer is YOU DON'T. Dogs which are an integral part of the family (i.e. not chained in the backyard) and are treated as a member of that family will be naturally protective. Think about it, if someone were kind to you and saw to your every need, that of food, water, shelter and companionship, wouldn't you be the first to defend them if you saw someone approaching that might alter that situation? Animals are no different. They can sense when others want to do them or their family members harm and will take the initiative to protect them. Pit Bulls have a bad enough rap w/o people TRYING to make them mean. Have a look at this information and see for yourself the tough world Pits are up against today simply for being a Pit. Don't make it worse for them, they are great dogs without all the bad publicity.

Why would you want him to go after someone, Pit bulls looks alone keep people away. I walk my American Bulldog and you should see the looks I get from people and how many people cross to the other side of the street when they see me walking my pup. If anything my pup would only lick them on the face and want to say Hi but so many people are just scared of bully type breeds, I have had many comments that I should have my dog muzzled because he is a pit bull (which he is not he gets mistaken for that a lot of times) and he is only a pup right now, so I would imagine what people are going to do when he is bigger. If you train your dog to go after someone you are held liable for any injuries, be a responsible pit owner and not give people the chance to give pit bulls more of a bad reputation. I hope you didn't get a pit bull just to make it mean, that's so irresponsible.

Please don't even try pits are naturally protective. You could end up making him very mean. My sister have pit playboy he is very friendly loves kids & get along great with other dogs of all sizes my 2 little ones like to chew on him & he never has a problem. He has never even tried to bite anyone. But in the same he is very protective over the people in his pack. A young man grabbed my sister and was going to hit her 7 playboy jumped in between them and just gave the guy a very scary look and growled. The guy let go right away that's all it took. when the guy let go playboy sat down & was fine. Natural instinctive , my sister never taught him that. She never wanted to take that chance of him bitting some one. She is very strict with him no big horse or ruff play. He loves walks swimming playing catch or tug or running. A person who know a lot about pits is Cesar Millan & he can help you with any ? or concerns but don't teach him bad habits it could cost you lots of Money & his life. here is his web site http://www.cesarmillaninc.com/

Get on The internet and find the www.worldclassk-9.com website. Watch some of the training videos. Julius is not a cheap trainer but he can do amazing things with pit bulls. I think you'll find what you're looking for there.

make yourself scary. Never try to make a pit scary. 1. pits make poor guard dogs old saying is" A pit never meets a stranger." meaning they so love people they will love even the bad guy. That is why even after being abused so bad they are almost dead they still wag their tails and kiss people. @. you have to be mean to turn a pit they become a danger to you as well as everyone else. Most people are afraid of pits anyway

You're asking for trouble if you just try to make him mean. If fact, pit bulls' reputations have suffered precisely because of stupid owners who don't educate themselves about handling a pit.

In the first place, pit bulls already know how to be "scary dogs". They have been selectively bred to have amplified grab-bite and kill-bite in their prey drive sequence. This is evident even when they are puppies, because they go after everything that moves -- a leaf swaying in the wind, or your pants leg as you walk by. It was recently reported in the news that two pits used as "guard dogs" at an automotive shop escaped from the fenced lot and attacked a passerby. They were not protecting the owner or his property, they were merely satisfying their prey-drive instinct.

I think what you want is to conditon him to obey commands like police dogs are taught. Get a professional trainer, or do some research on their methods to learn how to do it yourself. But keep your expectations realistic. Pits don't have the ideal temperament for such training. If he can't learn it perfectly, abandon the idea -- for his sake.

From the way you asked the question, it sounds as if you have not much experience in the dog world. You cannot have a little of both. The dog is either trained to apprehend or he is not. And that asinine sounding phrase of "he only bites on command" needs to go too. What happens if you have a really bad cold and cannot talk, or if you are sleeping? Leave the dog alone or get someone who trains dogs for that purpose to evaluate your dog. If he has what it takes, and that is a BIG IF, you can either train him in protection or not. Good luck either way and please, educate your self.

You will not have much luck with any dog chasing but not hurting anyone. Even if it was a possible feat, why? I am the biggest advocate against breed-bans and restrictions, but do you understand that a pit bull will be regarded as much more dangerous if he or she bites someone than another breed would? With another breed, you get three strikes before euthanasia, but with a pit bull, it rarely takes more than one. Be a good pet owner and treat yours like a member of your family, not someone hired to protect you.

Seek professional dog training.
Pit bulls are NOT dogs to self train if you have NO dog training or behavior experience.

I have owned several pit bulls, dobermans, german shepards and many other hunting breeds.

Get professional help, Both of you. Sorry, but you really can't have it both ways. That "breed" needs to be one or the other, both is too much to ask. They will turn...and NOT understand what they did wrong. So my professional advise, make it a pet and spade/neuter it ASAP.

I loved my pits....Sweet dogs.yet mine were not for kids and liked to kill small animals (squirrels, cats and even puppies)....it is their basic nature. So as a responsible owner I had to create a safe space for them and my family.
