Wow I was surprised to see an answer of Philip Kapleau Roshi. He was a disciple of Master Taisen Deshimaru. Deshimaru wrote a few books. I read The Way of True Zen. It made clear some of the misunderstandings that I had from reading other books about zen thought. Most importantly, every time I read it, I am reinforced with the motivation to do zazen. I'm very thankful.
I also read Deshimaru's book, Sit. Not quite as direct as the Way of True Zen, as far as I can tell.
I don't feel that I am capable of commenting on his writings, even though I have only praise for him. I probably don't understand the gravity of his writings. I'm reluctant to submit this answer, but I will because I think you should be aware of Deshimaru. Sorry if that sounds silly.

Hey in case any of you Zen devotees aren't aware, there's an "Elana's Zen" page out there and it's REALLY nice. I'm not into Zen stuff except to read now and then, but it's got all kinds of nice things there... DailyZen.com
I don't want points for this, just sharing.
