The medieval rabbi Maimonodes (R' Moshe ben Maimon, Egypt) gave the following explanation (I'm assuming you know Genesis):
After Adam & Eve were kicked out of Eden, they and their descendants lived in the world. After a while, they looked up at the stars, moon, and sun, and started praying to them AS servants of God. After a while longer, they started thinking that they were gods themselves. Then they started thinking, Well, if a star can be a god, I'll make an image of a star/sun/moon. Well, if that's a god, so can an image of an animal/an animal/an image of a person/etc. Then Abraham came along and reintroduced monotheism, but everyone else was pagan. Then other religions that adhered to the "one God" theory got started, but each one had its own idea of how to serve God and said the others were not serving Him properly.
What exactly God wants is impossible to know without some code of laws, be it Bible, Koran, etc. But that's a different question.

Speaking for my Christian (Catholic) belief, it is like a family that is composed of a bunch of kids. Each one hears things and reacts to them in a different way. They still have the same mom and dad. When they have questions later in life they go back to mom and dad and they remind them how it really was when they were a child.

Church to me is the same way. We have a beginning of Christianity developed the true scriptures collected called; the bible. Children have interpreted them in various ways, some literal and some contextual. When we go back to the original text and put it in a form of; What did it really mean, we get a correct answer. If we take the literal form, we make it a history book with flat world mentality and not a living answer for the 21st century.

Application is what I think my religion proclaims for me. How it makes me change and do better is my personal Faith and belief. Theologian's of the church have been praying and studying passages for 1000's of years. So since I am not a bible scholar I will leave the interpretation to the sort of; "parents of the truth."
There will be people that don't want to believe in a just God and One that loves and forgives us. Some people will believe in an eye for an eye type of religion. I personally believe in Jesus the One that came to bring; redemption for us because of the first sin, forgiveness and love and an afterlife to all of his beings and subjects.

In some religions they have more than one God. Some religions believe in the same God but live their lifes differently. And some have a totally different God. You need to get different opinions from different Religions.

The multitude of religions in the world stem from the number of major ways people believe it's possible to reach God. You'll see in your religion section that over time many of these religions have altered their outer trapping and rituals, but their goal remains the same . . . to reach out to one God. It never occurs to many that God could reach out to us. Congratulations on being a sincere seeker, by the way.

Because religion has more to do with a culture than anything else. To a warrior God is a warrior, to a merchant God is a merchant, to a cannibal God is a cannibal. In case you're wondering, the God of Judeo Christian religion(s) (Yahweh)got his start as a pagan Canaanite war god.

Because the word "God" has been miscontrued as a "being" outside of ourselves when really it is within, it is consciousness - the source of all life.

Within every religion you will find the truth, buried beneath a distortion of misperceptions, delusions and exaggerations.........but the truth is there in each religion if you look deep enough.

That is what makes it so mad when religions fight against each other. Their religions all come from the same source......they are all worshipping the same thing and fighting over it!!!!

Different religions see God in a different light. You don't see everything the same as say your father or mother. Same idea with religion. They all differ slightly, but have a similar tone. Just get out and pray and make sure you aren't a heathen.

The idea of "One God" is simply monotheism. This is only one form of religion. There is also pantheism (many gods). So the "so many religions" of your question is mainly directed at "so many monotheistic" religions. And the answer to your question is that like life itself, religion and belief, diversify over time to find many niches for survival. The irony of it is that as religion itself evolves over time and diversifies into many sects, some modern sects deny the idea of evolution altogether, and conservative christians deny diversity as a valued tool. Go figure.

You're going to be more confused before the end of the day if this is the place that you seek truth.

Is there a God? Is there more than one God?

I'm a Christian, so many of the q&a in R&S is interesting, but not enlightening.

I like crosswalk.com and the forums, which cover so many topics important to me, a believer in Jesus as my savior.

Hope all goes well my confuse friend.

Men write the books which become religions. God just happens to be the star of each book. Its like saying how can there be so many movies with Tom Cruise in it when there is only one Tom Cruise. Get it?
