Seeking spiritual things and not earthly things

Yes, I've often heard Protestants quote that passage from Scripture to explain that when we die we cannot go to a temporary place like Purgatory.

However, the verse cannot be taken literally for one glaring reason: What if you go to Hell? Aren't you absent from your body? But you're not present with the Lord.

So, obviously there can be exceptions.

Catholic theology takes seriously the notion that "nothing unclean shall enter heaven." (Rev. 21:27) So a less than cleansed soul, even if its sins are "covered," still remains a dirty soul underneath and isn’t ready for heaven. It needs to be cleansed or "purged" of its remaining imperfections. The cleansing occurs in purgatory.

The necessity of the purging is taught in other passages of Scripture (2 Thess 2:13) which declares that God chose us "to be saved through sanctification by the Spirit." Sanctification is thus not an option, something that may or may not happen before one gets into heaven. It is an absolute requirement, as Hebrews 12:14 states that we must strive "for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord."

I hope this is helpful to you. If you want to chat more about Purgatory please email me paxicotrader@yahoo.com

God bless you.

Yes, in Colossians and Corinthians.
It means that upon death, when our spirit leaves our bodies, we will be in the presence of Christ. And most likely, we will be judged then.
(The Great White Throne Judgment spoken of in Revelation will come for non-believers.)

I've heard "absence makes the heart grow fonder"....same idea, right? I don't think we go to heaven or hell or anywhere when we die. I was gonna say Wal-Mart but....I think we go to K-Mart....peace

When you leave this body (are dead), you are in the Lord's presence.
