Boston terrier. They are 10-25 pounds, and all are a lot of dog in a small body. They stay cute and puppy-clownish, are easily trained, and are ready for any game or outing. I am not a Bosties breeder, but they are probably my favorite smallish dog.

Pugs are another fave of mine, but they don't have the stamina of a Bostie. They don't handle 'weather' whether rainy or hot. They also have more health issues.

There really isn't the best family dog. All most every dog can be a family dog. I would research different small dog breeds, but I know that cocker spaniels are not the best with kids. Maybe a kind of terrier, or a corgi mix... also pit mixes are great with kids and family, you just have to be careful if you have any other pets.
than just go down (you and if you are married, bring the other parent also, but wait to bring the kids. Trust me the kids are going to want everything and everyone, so bring the kids later that day) to the local animal shelter and see what animals they have. If they don't seem to have anything in your interest try www.petfinder.com to search for a dog. also keep checking back with the shelters..good luck

Depends on the family. We can't just read that question and rattle off a dog that will get on famously in your family.
Some people will say Labradors, some people swear by their varying types of spaniels, I swear by Boxers, other people hold English Bulldogs as the best family dog. The list goes on and on - and all these breeds are so different from each other.
Your best bet is to write down a few breeds you've heard of that you think would fit in well with your family. Or some other breeds you're just interested in learning more about. Ask actual owners about them, ask actual breeders about them. Or you could go to a site like this - www.dogbreedinfo.com Do some research, and if you like what you see, get serious about looking around for one.

Your going to get every answer under the sun with this question everyone thinking their dog breed is the best. I think if your going to chose a dog you need to decide how much time and effort you want to put into the dog before you buy one. Will you play and walk it every day. are you willing to groom it or have it taken to the groomers. Where will the dog reside inside, inside/outside, outside only {not my preference and I have 2 dogs one is 80 pounds and the "puppy" is 120}. If you have small children I don't recommend a small dog to fragile and surely not a chihuahua they can be very nippy with kids.
My dogs right now are a black lab {shes the 120 pounder so they can get big is they are from "block head" parents she is AKC} and a Brittany spaniel. Both great dogs however w any "working breed" they need alot of mental stimulation

If you are seeking a specific breed, then I have to agree with the above and go with Pugs. We bred Pugs for several years. They are good, sturdy little dogs and excellent with children. They are very friendly and cheerful and wonderfully loyal to their owners. They are active little dogs, which makes them great for kids, and range between 15-25 pounds, in general.
A note of warning: they cannot be outside dogs. Pugs left outdoors in the heat can suffocate and die, so if you are looking for an outside dog, any dog with a smashed nose would not be your best choice.

that is not easy to answer, because you need a breed that suits your needs. for example a jack russel has lots of energy and would be good with kids (it could keep up) but the require alot of excersize so if your a couch potatoe, forget it. Apug is a great dog, but can have health problems. and becasue of that must not be out in cold or hot for very long at all. but are well suited for the couch patato.
Here is what i suggest goto a pet store. like a petco. buy a breed book, they list all breeds and rank them on several catagories. like energy, well with kids, grooming requirements... ect...
when you do know what you want go to AKC website and find recommended breeders for that breed. there are way to many puppy mills and sub par breeders out there, essentially making un healty pets. you'l pay more, but avoid a heartbreak or costly vet bills in the long run.
Also go to puppy socialization classes, it gets the puppy use to you and to how you want it to behave. without it, the dog may be a "pain" or "misbehaved" but those are products of pour training. do you and the dog a favor and get it socialized early on.
the review above me is correct, i have 2 pugs they are a hoot, but CAN NOT handle heat or cold, very suseptable to heat stroke, becasue they can not breath well.also with kids, you must keep an eye on the KIDS becasue pugs are very suceptable to having eyes poked out, and kids love to poke at dogs eyes.

English Springer Spaniel. Around 40-50 lbs. Great with kids. They love being with people and want to please. They do, however, need exercise. And they are known to be theives so keep your garbage cans tightly closed and sandwiches away from the edge of the table!
I have a small male. He's 8 years old. Great dog.
