I suffered badly from sinus headaches until it got to the point where my GP was about to refer me to a specialist. I had tried over the counter decongestants and nasal sprays but they only worked for a few days. I had also tried prescription decongestants and been prescribed antibiotics in case my sinuses where infected.

It turns out it is histamine related and that an anti-histamine was my saviour! Apparently this is also quite common. I'm also on a prescription steriod nasal spray which helps keep down the inflammation. My headaches appear to have gone - thank goodness!

I would recommend you go to your GP and work with them and just perservere until you find what is right for you.

In the meantime the best over the counter nasal spray I found was Otrivine. You could try this until you see your GP.

Good Luck

I don't know from personal experience but my Brother-In-Law got terrible sinus headaches. He was able to get some relief by draining the hot water heater onto his forehead. I'm sure it was temporary but I, too, have chronic pain and I know how valuable relief can be even it is only temporary.

I wish you the best of luck on this. I hope someone here can provide you with a full blown cure, not just some temporary relief.

I think sudafed is probably the best 'over the counter' decongestant you can buy. If you've had trouble with your sinuses for 30 years though, I would imagine that you would be better referring to your doctor. They may be able to give you some stronger medicine, or refer you to a consultant.

I have reoccurring trouble with my sinuses, but it tends to be when I have a head cold, or hay fever.

I also recommend inhaling steam with your head covered with a big towel. Usually sinusitis is a chronic, multifactorial condition and it takes time for a remedy. How about the anatomy of your upper respiratory tract?
