I noticed them last night when he was getting in the shower. They were all over his body. From his cheeks to his toes. Some were quite large. He said he got them Sunday at church, too (he thought he was getting the chicken pox again, lol). I know of nothing different that we have done or that he has eaten. We gave him some Benedryl and he was fine this morning. What should I do if this happens again and what might be the cause? Could it be a delayed reatcion to a cat we got about nine months ago?

It could be a myriad of things, but the first question a doctor would ask is have you changed soaps or laundry detergents.

Sounds like a food or drug allergy. Pet dander allergies usually (but not always) manifest as respiratory problems. Like the others said, monitor what he's been eating and drinking and any medicines he might be taking, and if you're aren't using one already, switch to an unfragranced laundry detergent. Allergies can pop up any time, and often disappear just as suddenly (I know mine did), so just because you haven't changed anything doesn't mean he's not allergic to something in his environment. If the hives aren't painful, it's probably not a reaction to the sun, which is a rare but dangerous "allergy" (look up the range of diseases called porphyria). If it happens again and you can't connect it to anything you've been tracking, get him to a doctor for allergy testing.

its most likely a food related allergy. They can develop suddenly. I used to break out in hives whenever I got hot-covered in them from head to toe. I dealt with it for 30 years, then found out I am allergic to wheat, soy, eggs, dairy, tomato, peanut, and avacado. I suggest allergy testing, or keeping a food journal to see if he gets them within 36 hours of eating certain foods. You can get a free online diary at nutridiary.com. Make sure you list EVERYTHING he eats or drinks, right down to a stick of gum or candy. You will likely see a pattern fairly quickly. Since eliminating these things from my diet, the hives have never come back. Good luck. Email me if you need more info

Sounds like a food allergy..

That normally happends to me when i have orange lollies.. I break out in hives cant stop itching and it turns red..

If he breaks out again give him some Pryton -Always helped me!

Try and think what he ate yesterday that might of given him these hives, and try to avoid him eating it in the future.

I agree with Beebs that allergy testing is very much in order.

Now, it could even be that your son is allergic to a perfume someone in church was wearing. In any case, watch him closely.

Good luck!
