He sleeps in our bedroom (with door closed) and constantly whines and cries. We let him out to pee -- sometimes he goes, sometimes not - but the whining continues. Maybe he wants to be able to roam the house? He is housetrained and is left to roam the house when we go out. Any ideas?

Try putting a ticking clock near the dog's bed as well as a favorite toy. If the door is closed does the dag have access to water?

My German Shepherd is now 14 months old. What I did to prevent whinning from occuring, was tiring him out!!I would play fetch or have him chase me(after he would do his duty of course)then give him just enough water (to prevent an evening accident) later, we would all go to bed exhausted. He never got up till the morning!!!Not even to roam!!!

why not let him roam the house at night since he is left alone with no problem during hte day and since he is house trained? Most dogs don't like to be confined to one room and like to be able to patrol the inside perimeters of the house..

Allow him to get some extra time roaming the house, perhaps? Maybe he's hungry?

they usualy do this for attention.
you could put a quiet radio next to him.
but if it is for attention then you need to compleatly ignor him to get him to stop. (he will get louder just befor he stops)
but try leaving the door open for a while to see
