I just went to a gastrologist today and found out that I have to go in and have a endoscopy done at the hospital. Can anyone that's had one done before tell me what too expect from the procedure and is it outpatient,do I get too go home after the procedure is done?

Yes, have had this done and it's a little uncomfortable but not unbearable. It's outpatient meaning when it's over, you can go home. I had a mild sedative just to relax; you can put your concentration on visual imaging and that will help with your gag reflex. It doesn't take that long and is to your benefit. You will be laying on your side and the doc will pass a scope down your throat and examine your stomach and esophagus. You'll do just fine. Godloveya.

I had an endoscopy done back when I was studying in the university, as I had problems with acid reflux and had constant problems with digestion.

Endoscopy is an outpatient procedure. You can expect to go home several hours - at most - after it's been done.

What happens is they will first give you a sedative. It will not make you sleep, just drowsy. The reason being, if you are completely sedated, the tube will not be able to go down your throat and into your stomach.

After you become drowsy, the doctor will then attempt to insert the tube down into your stomach to have a look inside, and perhaps also retrieve a sample for a biopsy.

You will be fully conscious throughout the entire procedure.

For me, the process was uncomfortable and rather excruciating. When they insert the tube down your throat, the first reflex you will experience is that you will gag and attempt to puke (the "gag reflex"). You have to suppress the gag reflex though, and attempt to "swallow" the tube down your throat so it can go down to your stomach.

Once you've got the tube down, the doctor will very quickly take a look inside and then pull the tube out again.

The discomfort comes from the gag reflex and the pain of the tube going down your throat.

Also, after the procedure, you will probably be given some antibiotics or painkillers to help deal with the pain and any infections that might occur from having shoved that tube down your throat to your stomach.

For me, I experienced a severe throat infection that lasted almost 1 week after having my endoscopy done. When I confronted the doctor about it, he denied any responsibility.

Hope your endoscopy goes better.

what is the endoscopy for????? that will determine wether or not u get to go home, your dr should have told u what to expect and explain exactly what they will do, what they will use and wether or not u will be able to go home. call him back and ask the questions to get answers, he will be the best one to answer them for u. if they just insert the tube to just look in your stomach for example u will be able to go home, if they take biopsies for some reason depending on y u r having it done they might want u to stick around.............gl
