Free will is eternal. Thing is though, when we are in Heaven, we will have the free will to choose to worship God or not. The angels had that same free will and many chose to go their own way and follow the devil, and they are now fallen angels, or demons. Still, while in Heaven, while we will have the free will to choose, evil cannot exist in Heaven, and we will be so filled with awe and reverence for God that we will not choose to turn from Him. It will be like a reflex action to worship Him. The reason the same didn't hold true for the demons who followed Satan was because Satan had not been defeated at that point. God promises to defeat Satan one day, and there will be no need to worry about our free will getting us into trouble in Heaven when that happens.
As to hell, sure, we can protest all we want to and say we choose not to go, but it will do no good once we are condemned by God. We are powerless to defend ouselves against our Maker when He is punishing us. Besides, when God judges us, even those going to Heaven will feel such great shame at all the sins we have committed during our lives. God will judge us for them and then wipe the slate clean because Jesus paid the price for our sin. ALL of us will feel great shame for our sin, and while we might choose on this earth that we don't want to go to hell, once we are facing God's judgment, we will understand that hell is the only logical choice for our sins because we will have such great shame. It will not be up to us at that point. The time to exercise our free will is here and now, while we are still alive because it will be too late once we are dead. It's really not that difficult. Christians are no different than anyone else except that they chose to accept Christ's payment for their sin.

What happens if you get sentenced to go to prison and choose not to go?
Ask a stupid question, would you?
If there was a hell, I don't think you'd just be walking there.
Admittedly, you'd need your free will intact for hell to actually be a suitable punishment. Without free will, you wouldn't actually be able to choose not to like what was going on, and as such there could be no suffering.

your life here on earth is where you have free will- once you die, and then the judgement there is no choice-
In Phil. 2 it says that "one day EVERY knee will bow, and confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father". That even means those who have chosen not to accept Christ while on this earth. You will have no choice- when you die and our judged you will either go to heaven or hell- and how do you know which one it will be-
If you do not accept Christ for the payment of your sins- hell
If you accept Christ and then desire to repent- turn from you sins- heaven. Choose life with Christ now!!

Hell is separation from God. God won't hear you after the final judgment. Time to choose is now.

The judgement is a confirmation of your free will.
If you spend your entire life avoiding God, do you think he is going to force you to be in his presence in heaven after you die? No.
If you spend your entire life looking for God and talking to him and obeying him - do you think he will deny you heaven? No. Because his son has paved the way for your forgiveness.
C.S. Lewis said there are ultimately two types of people in the world: those who say to God "thy will be done" and those to whom God says "THY will be done"
You might enjoy reading "The Great Divorce" by C.S. Lewis - it's a fictional story about heaven and hell and really quite good.

After you die, you no longer get free will. The Lord has warned all of us to choose life and Him before we die, if we do we go to heaven. If we dont and die, then we will end in hell for eternity. Plain and simple.

On earth you embrace either righteousness or self-righteousness. If you embrace righteousness, you chose to have your sinful nature exterminated and you go to heaven with no capability of sin because you have embraced light. If you do not atone for sin, you chose to embrace darkness, and you go to hell and keep your sinful nature.

Entering into the spirit realm put us on God's turf, not ours.
