A half cover allows for a quicker response time for counter punchers, but allows for more puncehs to get through. A full cover does exactly the opposite. A cross arm cover is not commonly used and considered an unorthodox style of blocking, but some "slick" fighters (see James Toney) use it with their own style of fighting to confuse opponents. It also makes it a litle easier to 'slip' punches.

Thumbs up to Zack, blogbaba never was much for defense I always blocked a lot of shots with my head. Didn't make for the longest of boxing careers, my style didn't win me many fans in the ring.
