I would like to bike around Florence but the idea of being part of a tour group and having someone else manage my day is a real turn off.
How can I rent a bike and do a tour of this sort myself?

Easy-there are bike rental places in the heart of Florence and just get on the country road and take off and you are free to roam. Did it and it was great! You won't want to do much biking in Florence proper, as the cobblestones and vespas will knock you over, but the surrounding area is perfect for biking! I feel the same way about tour groups.

Don't worry there are lots of places where you can hire bicycles in Florence - though almost everything is walking distance anyway.

There will be listings in most travel guide books, or you can search online, or you can ask the Tourist Information Office when you get there.
