My son is a year old now and I know at a year old you are supposed to switch to whole vitamin D milk. I was just wondering how is tummy will take the change of milk. Any moms out there have any input on how their little ones handled whole milk the first time they gave it to them? What should I expect if anything but for him to drink it?

Use search... this question has been asked on here a million times. The consensus seems to be that you make the switch at 12 months old... you would have to read the individual answers to see the results of the switch.

Good luck.

Just to be on the safe side make the switch gradule by replacing one bottle or sippy cup a day with milk. Do that for a week then then go to two. Most children tolerate cows milk well, but some have a hard time adjusting to the taste, so don't be surprised if your child rejects it at first, just be patient, and don't worry. In about two months you will have it totally accoplished and your child will be drinking milk. Now if your child is prone to allergies, then they may very well show an allergic reaction which could be vomiting or a rash so keep a watch, but I am sure your child will be fine.

You should not switch all of a sudden because it is a big change on their tummy's. Start out adding some whole milk to the formula then getting it up to half formula and half whole milk in the bottle til you get it all the way with just whole milk in the bottle.

My son got constipated from switching but it only happened once after that he was fine with whole milk.

What I done with my kids was to mix the milk with the formula at first. To start with, I would mix 3/4 formula and 1/4 milk. I would do that for a few days, then mix it half and half for another few days. Then 3/4 milk and 1/4 formula for a few days more. Then at the last, it was all milk. That way, their little tummys could adjust to the milk slowly instead of all at once. Hope that this helps. Good luck!

At 1 year old you son should only really be having formula feeds in the evening before bed by now so the switch to real milk is easy.

I just gave him it instead of formula for his bedtime bottle and offered him some toast as well and it all went fine.

If your son is still having bottles during the day its time to cut them back and offer whole milk out of a cup instead.

We had no problem switching our's to whole milk. Ours were on formula, so we were not too worried about their tummies. Ask your doctor if you are concerned and maybe just introduce it gradually over a few days in order to watch more closely how his stomach is taking the change.

Also, we threw all of the bottles out at 1 year and used sippies or the cups with straws--Our doctor advised us to just take the bottles out completely with this new change and my kids had no problem with it at all...

My sons' pediatrician said that unless kids have very sensitive stomachs, there's no reason to wean them off formula/breast milk onto cow milk--just switch them cold turkey. Both my boys LOVED cow milk the first time they tried it. I'm sure it tasted very sweet to them after drinking formula with iron for the last 12 months! No digestive upsets, refusing the milk, etc. They both did really well.

It's my understanding that some breastfed babies refuse cow milk because (obviously) mom's milk is better, and that those people are the ones who have to wean onto the cow milk. I don't think formula fed babies really have any problems though. Have you tasted formula recently? YUCK! lol

With my daughter I mixed a little bit of her formula with the whole milk - and gradually removed the formula from the mixture, until she only drank whole milk. This way her tummy stayed soft and she did not notice the difference immediately. Good luck!

I Gave my girls half milk and half formula for the first few days and began decreading the formula. They tolerated it well and began to enjoy the taste of real milk much better than formula. Once I was giving them 100% real milk I stopped heating it and started putting it in a sippy cup. I hope this helps.

I didn't have any problems switching to whole milk. I still warmed it up as that's how my daughter preferred it. I have a few more weeks and my son will be switching as well.
Unless your son has an intolerance to lactose, he should be just fine. Good luck.
