I've had a painful, swollen, red bump (about the size of a mosquito bite) on my hip. It's spread slightly from the size of a dime to about the size of a half dollar. The red area is very warm. It doesn't look like an insect bite, and when I noticed it, I did not notice an insect anywhere near me. What could it be?

It does indeed sound like an insect bite due to the spreading and the size, that's the dead give away right there. Could be a spider, flea, fire ant, anything could have bitten you while you were asleep, in the car, at work, etc.

I had my son at the pediatrician for this just yesterday. He was bitten by something on his foot, hand and forehead. The doctor said if it's itchy take Benadryl, take advil to reduce swelling and use a cortisone cream twice a day for a week. All that cost me a $20 copay! There you go, you got it for free.

My son woke up with these bites, so I was stumped. Maybe a mosquito was in his room, maybe a spider bit him... jeez I hope it's not spiders. Either way, after 24 hours he looks so much better it's amazing, that cream is terrific.

Now go get some cortisone cream and take an anti-inflammatory like Aleve or Advil. It'll look & feel better soon.

Could just be a pimple that hasn't brought up a head yet... leave it alone and it should start to shrink and will disapear in a few days. If you sqeeze those you rarely relieve them, they just weep badly and don't heal as fast.

Sounds like a boil or similar infection. Apply a warm compress to bring it to a head and then drain. Once it drains, wash with an anti-bacterial soap, and bandage.

It might just be a sore from your pants rubbing against it.
