My 10yr old has just come home from school and a chair has fell off the desk and onto the bridge of her nose. It is a horrid bluey colour bump and looks quite raised. I have put a cold compress on it, is this all I should do?
Cheers.

There are lots of little facial bones that can get broken, even if the nose doesn't look visibly broken, it can be. Have a facial x-ray to rule out broken bones asap.

Keep the head elevated, no laying down yet, ICE it and take anti-inflammatories like Advil, Aleve. Cold compress should contain ice and keep icing it.

One or both eyes usually go black, too. Be prepared for the blood to spead under the skin beneath the eyes within 24 hours. It looks dreadful but doesn't hurt, the nose is going to hurt for quite a while.

Poor thing, hope it feels better soon. Take care.

Hi there,
You seem like a very caring and responsible parent. Putting a cold compress on an injury like that is exactly what you should be doing. It will help ease the pain and reduce the swelling. Just a thought, it's always helpful if you have a parent who has done First Aid and who may be able to offer advice in situation like this. Remember not all parents are stupid, just some of them. I hope your child soon gets better. And finally, why not let her wear shades to school to hide the bruising? She will love the "Cool" image that conveys.

Hope this helps, and by the way, the response from MrsZ is spot on and definately deserves "Best Answer".

I would make a complaint with the school so this is documented in case anything serious arises. Keep a cold compress on it. Definiely momnitor it. Does your child have trouble breathing through her nose. If It is still bruised tomorrow it might be broken. I think you should def make a report so the school can cover the medical costs. They are liable for this injury.

The cold compress will reduce swelling.

Be aware of any visual disturbances, also nausea - should these occur seek medical attention at either G.P. or local A&E Dept.

Poor kid!

If nothing is actually broken, a cold compress should be fine.
