I'm a student working at a part-time job. I didn't make a ton of money this year. It was certainly less than 5,000. I'm wondering how much I have to make to file taxes. Do I need to file? The only thing they took out of my checks was fica and ss.

As long as your income from your job was under $5,150 and you had no other income you don't have to file a federal return. If you don't have to file a federal return then you don't have to file a MN return.

A resident of Minnesota is required to file a Minnesota income tax return if he or she is required to file a federal return.

Part-Year Residents: A part-year resident must file a Minnesota income tax return if his or her income from all sources (while a resident) PLUS his or her income from Minnesota sources (while a nonresident) exceeds $8,450.

Scenario 1) If your parents claimed you as a dependent, you will need to file a return. If you only paid social security and medicare throughout the year, you may owe the feds and the state some money.

Scenario 2) If your parents did not claim you, there would be no benefit to filing except you could get the federal excise phone credit back ($30).

Also, its not that we all "get" to file a tax return every year. We "have" to file a return every year. Many people end up cutting a check to the feds and the state every year.

If you are required to file a Federal return, (if you were a dependent), then you are required to file a MN return - see link.
If you have a chance of recovering any over payment of tax - do it! Why not.

You can free file thru www.irs.gov, free file...

good luck & bless
