I am a cereal-holic and have recently been eating unsweetened cereals like Cheerios and Plain Shredded Wheat in an attempt to eat healthier. But I miss my sweetened cereals and would like to be able to eat them again since the taste of nothingness is starting to get a bit old. That shouldn't be too big of a problem if the rest of my food for the day is very low in sugar right? As of now the only sugars I consume are ones from fruits and the small amounts found in bread for my sandwiches and such. I don't drink sodas or eat sweets like candy or cookies etc. I also read that added sugar allowances vary depending on the amount of calories one takes in per day. I am eating between 2500-3500 a day of mostly healthy foods. So what it all comes down to, is can I have Honey Nut Shredded Wheat without the guilt of eating too much sugar? I could just add fruit to the plain versions like I've been doing, but it just isn't the same and would like to just be able to live a little.

It is okay to eat a little sugar in your diet, but not too much. If you see the food pyramid, you notice that you only need a very little bit of sugar in your daily diet, but make sure you don't overdo it.

As long as you're not diabetic or have other blood sugar problems, sugar *in moderation* won't hurt you. People say, "Oh sugar is SOOOO bad for you, you shouldn't ever eat it." etc. Sugar is NOT bad for you--the problem is, it's just not good for you. What I mean is, it's empty calories and provides no nutrition (no protein, no vitamins, no fiber, etc.) The problem with eating sugar is, if you're drinking pop, let's say, you're taking in 150 calories and NO nutrition. If you drink the same amount of orange juice, you're getting vitamin C, folic acid, potassium, etc. If you drank a glass of pop, you'd be full and wouldn't want any OJ. See where this is going?

If you want to eat a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios every day, I say go for it. If you want to sprinkle a little sugar on a bowl of plain cheerios, go for that too! Just use a few teaspoons or maybe a tablespoon (depending on how large your bowl of cereal is). You don't want to use a quarter cup of sugar, you know? :)

Just don't overdo it...maybe two days a week, have some fun cereal, and the other days eat well...but it really shouldn't matter if you eat healthy for the rest of the day. Breakfast is burned up throughout the day no matter what you eat.
