The environment should reflect the children in our classroom. Children love to play with adult items so in a pretend area I would have some real items and some play items. I would have some real dishes and clothing for pretend. What are your children interested in. My children are really into animals right now so we have a veterinarian office in the classroom. We took a trip to a local veterinarian and the children helped me think of things to put in our pretend office and off they went. I also have puzzles with animals, books, art supplies etc. based on what they are interested in. I think you need to have an uncluttered environment with all materials labeled so they have a space. You need plenty of room for children to move and explore. I would decorate the room in a way that is culturally meaningful to the children in the classroom. For instance I am from southern Ohio and one of my children's father is a blue grass banjo player. I have a pictures of banjos on the wall and he loves to talk about his dad playing music. This can work for anything. I also have books on the shelves that children have made and picture albums with words to describe pictures so children can "read" them.
