i know you just desaturate to achieve a black-and-white effect. how about sepia?

Change your photo to gray scale then make it a duo tone image. This will allow you to get your idea of a perfect sepia tone (as well as any other combination of colors you might like)

The simplest method is to Desaturate for the B&W effect -> Open up Hue / saturation -> Choose Colorize -> Select a reddish/orange tone. Play with intensity.

However, photoshop does have a default action already built that creates teh sepia effect.

turn your photo into black and white and then add "tone" back in. There is a slider that you can use and it will make it sepia. Just adjust the slider until it is the tone you like.

Depends what version of photoshop you have, CS2 has a choice to select filters and then choose a color cast. Easy way in one action.

No doubt,there are better options in photoshop, but the easy way can b doing it with google picasa (can download free at http://angle-mine.blogspot.com ).
