My son was diagnosed a couple of years ago with icthyosis. It's a dry skin condition. I've gotten the skin everywhere else on his body under control. For some reason, no matter what I do, I can't keep his little head from getting dry. Sometimes the skin comes off in big chunks. I've tried prescription lotions, shampoo, and even a mouse that costs $160 a bottle! All of these things seem to work for a while and then they just stop working. I hate having to brush his hair because sometimes it hurts him :-( Do you have any suggestions for what I can do? Theres got to be something else that I haven't tried. Thanks for your input!

this is a remedy for the situation, not a cure.

put baby oil all over his scalp, cover with a light shower cap (those thin clear ones used for perms), put a towel over his pillow and put him to bed. In the morning, wash his hair, probably two or three times, to get all the oil out and use a comb lightly or a brush with smooth ends to brush all those flakes and skin patches off the scalp and out of the hair. Do this at least two times a week. I was so bad I did it nightly.

It helps to use a clarifying shampoo, Suave makes one, to remove the oil.

Dry scalp- tea tree oil. You can find it near the afro-american hair care products OR near the vitamins.

Neutragena t-gel shampoo. My daughters doctor recommended it to me for her dry scalp. Its great stuff and will also promote healthy hair that you notice after a couple of weeks.
