Hi Jason,

I partially agree with with many of the comments made here. But let me put this into an historical and ideological context for you.

After WW II, the USA viewed the world as essential bipolar:
There were the nations that supported the US, and those which supported the USSR. America embraced the foreign policy doctrine of "Containment" which said that communism must be (in effect) surrounded and not allowed to break out and spread. This is why the US became involved in Korea, and later still in Vietnam -- to "Contain" communist expansion.

For the USA, then, the world had only two camps -- those who were for the US, and those who were against it in the fight with international communism. When the US looked for allies around the world, the only question that mattered to them was whether someone was sufficiently anti-communist. What leaders did to their own domestic populations didn't matter to the US. Thus, during this period, the USA finds itself jumping into bed with all sorts of unsavory people like Marcos in the Phillipines -- Pinochet in Chile, and the Shah if Iran (to name but three).

All three of these men (and others who could easily be named) were given extensive American Aid. In 1953, the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran, Mohammed Mosaddeq, was trying to lessen foreign intervention in Iran. He wanted to nationalize the oil industry, and many in London and Washington believed he was a communist. As a result, he was overthrown by the CIA in a coup.

This is well known around the world, and is fully documented. The Iranian people know this. Once the Shah returned to full power he increased his secret police and engaged in a ruthless campaign of domestic suppression against critics to his regime. And all the while the USA did and said nothing to dissuade him. And the Iranian people know that too.

The story of the USA's involvement in Iran is one like many others that can be told. Because the USA was most interested in the leadership being anti-communist, they looked the other way when human rights were taken away. People have long memories, Jason.

Please understand, I'm no fan of the current regime in Iran. I believe their policies are dangerous, reckless, and not at all in the interests of the Iranian people. But they are doing everything to thumb their noses at the west because they are making a statement, that they won't be pushed around like pawns on a chessboard anymore.

I understand that -- I only wish more level-headed people were in control of these countries.

Hope this answer helps. Cheers, mate.

It doesn't take much to stand ground against the weak UN, which doesn't have the authority to enforce any of its resolutions or sanctions, so nobody (including the US) really takes them seriously.

Iran is standing its ground against the US because Ahmadinejad is seizing an opportunity to be seen as a leader in the Middle East (and to a lesser extent, the global Islamic community) due to a power vacuum left in the region by the fall of the Iraqi regime. He is smart enough to realize that too (although Iran is foolish in the manner it's handling the case of the captured British soldiers), but I wonder how many in Washington realize it.

He also knows that American voters won't support a war against yet another nation (the others primarily being Afghanistan and Iraq) without a more compelling cause than the threat of nuclear weapons, which he's inviting inspectors to help him prove that he doesn't have.

So far these three questions are dead on but there is more. Amadinejhad(not positive on the spelling) but any way this guy knows 2 key things. 1. The UN is made up of a bunch of chickens who wouldnt get into a fight if some1 came up and started wailing on them all they'd do is try to talk him out of it then they wouldnt press charges. And 2. The United States will never be able to go into Iran as long as the Iraq war is going how it is, plus were still in Afghanistan. Not only that now that Congress is in control by a bunch of wusses we probably couldnt even pass a war declaration and Mahmoud knows this. Simply put Iran stands up to the U.S. and UN because niether of them will do anything about it. I say we should just turn Iran into one big sheat of glass.

Cohonnes and the fact that the US has treated Iran like a pariah for 40 years.

From an Iranian point of view, the US/West funded and supported the Shah who by any point of view, ran a very despotic and dictatorial government. Friends of mine were in Iran just before the overthrow and were agast at the attitude of the westerners who were there and treated the locals like second class citizens.

After the overthrow, the western countries especially the US, brought in sanctions, trade embargos and attempted to bankrupt the country. Nobody would recognize a new popular governement.

Durning the Iran/Iraq war, western countries funded and supported Iran's enemy - openly.

Now the US/UN are trying to stop Iran from establishing a nuclear program but allow other countries to have them. In Iran's eyes it is both a double standard and an ongoing attempt to ruin Iran.

By standing up to the US/UN, Iran gains promenance amongst all of the third world countries who feel anger at the US/UN. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran is ex-special forces, very popular, and increadibly well versed in middle-east brinksmanship. He is not crazy but he does play CNN like a fiddle. Note how he had CNN and so many others jumping to his "Holocaust" tune. He knows the Holocaust took place - he is just screwing with the american media and looking good to the rest of the world.

He watchs the pay-offs made to North Korea and probably wants the same thing for Iran. He knows how over-utilized American/UK forces are and knows that there danger of an invasion is practically non-existant.

Most of the world may actually agree with him.

The belief (especially by Ahmadinejad) that the mahdi will appear soon at the Jamkaran mosque in Qom

The desire to drive all non-Muslims out of the Middle East and become the Middle Eastern superpower (complete with nuclear weapons)

They feel they are entitled to produce nuclear energy, same as most UN countries. OR, the guy has something up his sleeve, OR he's just freaking nuts.
