if i move back to the uk do i have to file any paperwork with british immigration or can my son just stay

Best of both worlds, really. Your son is now a dual national under both British and US citizenship laws.

You should register the birth of your son and arrange for travel documents at the nearest British foreign mission:

Your son should be able to stay by virtue of dual citizenship from birth. Contact the interior ministry for exact procedures. It should be nothing more than providing copies of parental passports and the sons birth certificate.

I believe you will have to. If your born here your American, I don't know the exact rules of your birth country.

well you will have to notify/register also the british about your son's birth. he will have dual citizenship.
