The cells in your body release Histamine. If they release alot of it, then you itch. For things like poison ivy, when your body realizes that something isn't right, these cells go to that spot and release the histamine. Then that spot starts to itch. If too much is released, it can cause bad things to happen like asthma attacks. So to stop the itch, people use ANTI-Histamines, like benadryl to counteract the histamine.

Our skin has a defense system that makes us aware of annoying things that touch our body. Sometimes that annoying thing is just a fly. But sometimes we come into contact with something like poison ivy that causes a reaction in our skin. Poison ivy or bug bites cause an allergic response that keeps our skin itchy for a while.

It is almost as if poison ivy or bug bites make our skin think that something constantly there irritating our skin. It is best to prevent these reactions.

Because the poison ivy or oak have a sticky substance on them; if it gets on your skin and stays awhile, it will make you itch and could cause you to break out. Some people are are very allergic to it. The more you scratch it the more it spreads. Sometimes you don't realize you have it at first. If you rub you eyes area and nose, etc.; you will need benadryl to get rid of it and/or an ointment. It can get out of control and go crazy before you hardly know it.
After working outdoors be sure to wash all exposed skin with soap and water in case you picked up a touch of it. If it gets on your clothes it will stay on them until you wash them. You probably can't see it.
