Electricity was not invented. Its a natural phenomena that explains the particle theory ( movement of electrons between atoms). Thales of Miletus was the first to write about amber being charged by rubbing, in 600BC.
Enlish Scientist, William Gilbert coined this senario "Electricity" in 1600. He also used the ters electric force, magnetic pole, and electric attraction.
Other discoveries came by:
- Otto Von Guericke in 1660
- Robert Boyle in 1675
-Stephen Gray in 1729
-Charles Francois du Fay in 1733
etc.
Inventers were: Pieter Van Musschenbroek 1747 - Leyden Jar; Benjamin Franklin 1752 - Lightening rod; Alessandro Volta 1800 - Electric Battery; Michael Faraday 1821 - Electrc motor; John Ambrose Fleming 1904 - Diode rectifier vaccum tube
Don`t forget George Simon Ohm 1826 - came with Ohm`s Law; James Clerk Maxwell 1873 - came with electromagnetic equation......nice read

Check out the Baghdad Battery in the link below. Electricity was discovered, as others said, but it was discovered thousands of years ago and lost again.

Ben Franklin didn't invent electricity and Thomas Eddison didn't invent the practical incandescent lightbulb, even the Discovery Channel credits Joseph Swan now.

Electricity wasn't invented. Its properties were discovered, examined and explained.

It was discovered thousands of years before that. Thales of Miletus, a Greek in 600AD discovered static electricity that attracted pieces of straw and hair to rubbed rods of amber. Volta invented the first real battery, in 1779. Benjamin Franklin was the first to liken static charges ot lightening, and found them ot be the same thing, electricity. He also discovered the difference between negative and positive charges. The word 'electricity' actually comes from the Greek 'elektron' meaning amber.

Ben Franklin discovered it, as electricity always is and will be. What the key did, I will never know. It was the string that would have conducted the lightning bolt to him. The key was probably just a grip for him, and people thought it actually had something to do with his theory.

As long as we are considering Franklin, look up Georg Richmann. Shocking.
