Turkish Vans are generally quite good with dogs. In fact breeders will insist that you keep a Turkish Van as an indoor-only cat, in part because often the cat will not see a dog as a threat, and can be injured or killed by a dog who attacks cats. They like to rough house, so they are good with older kids who know not to hurt a cat, but want to play with one. A Van will definitely draw a line on when play goes to far!

You should look into Bengals. Seriously, REALLY look into them, because they're not for everyone. But most of them get along great with dogs, children, other cats, you name it.
Have you thought about fostering a few different breeds to see which ones tend to have qualities you think would fit into your household? No breed is made up of clones (I used to have a Siamese that hated everyone but me), but there are breeds that are more likely to have certain tendencies than others. There are breed-specific rescues all over the country; why not look up who's in your area and offer to foster?

If you haven't already, I would research on the internet. Also, check your local animal shelter for older cats, making sure they have already been around older children & dogs. Hope this helps!

I recommend a Siamese or a Tonkinese. I have 3 Tonks, and they get along fabulously with my 60-pound Black Lab. I've only had the Tonks for 6 months, and it only took a few days for them to get used to her. My Korat likes the dog, too.

I've never noticed a preferred breed as such: All of my kitties have been rescues, more often than not with wild mommas.

I don't think it really matters. Most people have the basic american shorthair..which is not really a breed, it's more of cat "mutt" and they come in many colors and patterns.

I highly recommend Siamese as they are the most "dog-like" of cats.
