A "humanist" is someone who believes in human beings being responsible for their own actions (ie - not blaming them on the devil, god or some 'spiritual' entity) and in human beings working together to solve problems and make the world a better place.
Secular just refers to 'non-religious', as a 'secular state' - that is a state or government not governed by a religious authority (ie - the church of England or the Holy Roman Empire).
So a secular humanist (and there are religious humanists) is a humanist that believes in people running thier own lives (kind of an American thing don't ya think? although its not exclusively American) And that's way cool!

While the concept of secular humanist is a necessary stance against those who believe morals only come from god, I dislike the need for labeling. I dislike using a label as a justification (eg, of 'coolness') even more.

But, I would have to say that non-theistic morality is more wide and varied than the stagnant and outdated theistic morality and so there is a lot more to discuss, therefore more progress can be made.

People who believe in the inherent good in mankind, and don't believe in God are free not to judge or condemn others based on emotional beliefs.
