Well for one, circumcision has nothing whatsoever to do with fertility! It is simply a sign of the covenent between God and the people, Israel.

In the old Hebrew tradition, it had nothing to do with fertility. It was simply a sign of a covenant between God and the Israelites. Who knows why they chose that particular sign, but that is all it is.

I think it had to do with keeping things clean. My understanding is that when you bathed once a month in river water you run the risk of some serious bacterial problems with you guy bits and so trimming things a little meant less folds of skin for the bacteria to breed in.

They are all jungle rites that have carried over into the present day. Sort of like tattooing. Things one tribe did to make it 'better' than other tribes.
