I'm making a wind turbine that lights up an LED light for a science project. The instructions call for 28 gage enameled magnet wire but I can't find any 28 gage, just 26 & 30. I don't have time to order any but we find the 26 & 30 gage at radio shack. You experienced electritians, could you look at the project in the link and tell me if I can use 26 or 30 gage?

The 30 will be fine. It will be able to handle up to about 1/2 amp before getting warm, and that one little LED will come to only about a tenth to a hundreth of that. In fact, I'd take advantage of the smaller wire and add more turns, say about 10%, which will give you a little more power out for the same breeze.

Good choice of project, good luck to you.

Technically, it won't make that much difference as the basic principle here is to get the magnets to "pass" over the coils to create the electricity. One thing that is very critical is to have the correct distance of the magnets as they spin above the 4 coils. Example, 4 mm above the coils wouldn't be very effective. If you use the 30 gauge, put 220 turns per coil. Good luck with your project.

If the project requires you to build your generator, fine, but you could simply attach your propellor to the shaft of a DC motor and accomplish your goal.

You can use either. The original choice was likely based on what the author had on hand.
