Most Sony cameras are pretty good but they do make the occasional p.o.s.
Right now Sony only has one digital SLR model: the A100. The A100 is a 10-megapixel model, so if you were looking at a 7.2 megapixel Sony, it was a (high end) point & shoot. Perhaps the DSC H5. Here's a review for that one - see if you recognize the picture:

The bottom line however, is that Sony specializes snapshot cameras. If you want pro image quality, look at the Canon and Nikon digital SLR line up. Prices for an entry level kit start at $600.

As was previously said, the 7.2 Mpix camera you were looking at was not a DSLR. The only DSLR that sony currently produces is the A100. Sony purchased Minolta a year or so ago, and their team of engineers and designers for this product as well as any near term future upgrades is from Minolta. Minolta produced some fine DSLRs which had unique features (such as image stabilization) and the terrific minolta interface.

The A100 is a very competitive camera in its class.

Compared to its competetiors, no. Nikon and Canon will blow it away, or at least for the moment that is. Sony supposively is coming out with new models soon. But At the moment their SLRs have a few bugs to work out. I would not recommond a Sony SLR just yet.

Stick with Pentax, Nikon, or Canon. The Sony slr platform is weaker then those other platforms. Nikon is the top of the heap in many eyes, but I wouldn't discount Pentax's K10D. It is a step in the right direction, and has some great features.

If you like a lot of zoom, consider Sony Cybershot DSC-H2.
It's 6 megapixels, 12X optical zoom, has image stabilizer, very good on batteries, comes with battery charger, and takes excellent 8X10s when enlarged. I own one and love it......Sorry, after reviwing your question, this is not a slr.
