Any area of your home is usually suited to have a faux finish applied to your walls or surfaces. You must make sure that the finish you want does not overwhelm the cabinets and the additional colors that are within your kitchen. You want to enhance not take away.

With that said, a good color wash is always easy to attempt. If you want a two tone color effect, I would choose an under coat paint that is somewhat shiney (the terms of glossy, semi gloss and so on) but then as the top coat you used a slightly muted color and then dilute it, I use the 5 to 1 ratio; 1 part paint to 5 parts water, so that you have a wash that is applied to the top of the shiney paint. I would do a dry brush technique where you dip the brush into the mixture and brush over the surface in cross-hatching effect, or you can make lines or even the effect of "adobe" with this technique.

Another way is to use sponges in various shapes to do the same effect as above but "sponged" on. And you can add a softer color as well to enhanch the main colors.

I have also done the "crackle finish" on the cabinets, door frames, window sills and baseboards.

There is a large amount of information at bookstores as well as classes taught at home suppply stores such as Home Depot and Lowes. One thing I would recommed would be for you to buy some 16x20 sheets of white foam board or drawing paper and do samples of what you wish to accomplish before you attempt anything on your walls. In this way, you may find a technique that you may have not thought of while practicing the samples. Good luck and Happy Painting!

It depends on what type of faux finish you choose. There are many to choose from. In my experience, a faux finish looks great when you have bland countertops and cabinets, and if you don't have a lot of "flare" in your kitchen like little bobbles and decorations all over the place. Otherwise it will look too busy. If you have marble designs on your counters or emblems on your cabinets, or a lot of flare, a solid color looks the best on the walls. My favorite look is a parchment finish with dark woods on the cabinets and stainless steel appliances.

The spelling is "faux". It means "false" or "fake" in French.

The faux finish might look good if it looks like stone or stucco.

I'm not sure about this treatment in the kitchen. I like my kitchens clean and bright, so I usually paint a solid semi- or full gloss color like white or slightly off-white.

Good luck with your project.

We just put the faux finish in our kitchen. Sponging on, two colors including the base color. I think it looks fine, actually we had it before only we used a feather duster and three colors. We had to use quite a lot of feather dusters thou, because they got pretty loaded with paint. We didn't do any thing fancy !!!

LOL...faux finish looks exceptionally good when done right. I'm sure you've carefully selected the design you want to have (so it should look ok? How would we really know?), now make sure you watch all the how-tos about it. Sometimes those DIY clips make it look too easy, so don't get overly confident. But with care, you'll do fine.

There are a bunch of different faux finishes that can be done on your walls - which one were you looking at? You can make them look like suede, denim, plaster, stone ... you can color wash, stripe, etc.

Here's a website that tells about different faux finishes: http://interiordec.about.com/od/fauxfinishing/Faux_Painting_Techniques_and_Projects.htm

Personally, I love the look of an old plaster wall, and I think it would look great in a kitchen. Do what YOU like though - you're the one who'll see it every day :)

Faux is the word you're looking for.
There are many many faux finishing techniques.
I have a single glaze application in my kitchen and it is beautiful.

It completely depends on which faux technique you are considering and in what colors.
