I gotta pat you on your back for your walk out. I would have walked out too.

Most of those pups come from puppy mills at the pet stores. If you want a puppy at a reasonable price (Not $700 for everything they're trying to shove down your throat!) find a bulletin board around town, maybe even at the pet shop. (that's where I found mine, was on a bulletin.) Check your newspapers, petfinder.com, shelters, or whatever. Just make sure you go and SEE where the pup is coming from. check out what kind of home and conditions they have, before buying from them. If you get it from a shelter, keep in mind, you may be saving him from a certain death. You'd be helping yourself, and the dog out!
I bought a yorkie from a breeder who was, to put it nicely, a nasty old man. I had my heart set on a pup, so I overlooked it. Can't say I trusted him though. There's no way she was a full-blooded yorkie, and I paid at least $600 for her!

Anyway, I hope this helps and makes you feel better about your decision.

You did the right thing by not buying a pup from a pet store, but I'm afraid it was for the wrong reason.

Go to a shelter or rescue organization to adopt a dog. You can easily get one for less than $200, and you are not supporting the horrible breeding practices of those broker through pet stores.

But having a dog is expensive. It may not cost a lot to obtain a dog, but supplies, food, training, spaying/neutering (if not already done, but most shelters take care of this), regular check ups, and medical care for illness or injury add up. The larger the dog, the more it is going to cost you annually. If you can't afford at least $2000 a year to care for your dog, don't get one.

don't ever buy a dog from a pet store. They are bred by puppy mills with horrible conditions. If we all stopped buying them from those stores then the puppy mills would cease to exit. Find a reputable breeder that stands behind it's breed. Most reputable breeders guarantee the dogs eyes, hips, etc. Also if you ever decide you did not want the dog, you must return it to the breeder. click on the link below to read about a tragic story in Minnesota this week, no puppy mills...

It sounds to me like this pet store owner took you for all he thought he could get. Consider this a very expensive lesson.

And the spending has only just begun......

Vet bills, grooming, obedience class, boarding, food. Dogs are expensive and the purchase price is the least of it.
