Wellbutrin XL (extended release) does not have a generic yet. However, Wellbutrin SR (sustained release) has a generic called Bupropion SR.
The XL is usually taken once a day. The SR is usually taken twice a day in smaller dosages.

GENERIC NAME: bupropion
BRAND NAME: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL, Zyban
PREPARATION: Wellbutrin, round tablets: 75 mg (orange), 100mg (red). Zyban, round tablets: 100 mg (blue), 150 mg (purple). Wellbutrin SR, round tablets: 100 mg (blue), 150 mg (purple). Wellbutrin XL, tablets: 150 and 300 mg.
SIDE EFFECTS: The most commonly noted side effects associated with bupropion are agitation, dry mouth, insomnia, headache, nausea, constipation, and tremor. In some people, the agitation or insomnia is most marked shortly after starting therapy. Some patients may experience weight loss. Uncommonly, patients may experience manic episodes or hallucinations. Four of every 1000 persons who receive bupropion in doses less than 450 mg/day experience seizures. When doses exceed 450 mg/day, the risk increases ten-fold. Other risk factors for seizures include past injury to the head and medications which can lower the threshold for seizures.

It is bupropion. But, I don't think it can be taken in one dose like the XL.
For what it's worth... my best friend has been on this for anxiety for years. She recently moved and her insurance won't cover the Wellbutrin so she has to use generic and she swears it doesn't work as well as the name brand. She's never had any problems (nor have I) with any other generic medications. (I can tell a huge difference too, I'm not sure if she's right about the generic thing but her anxiety is as bad as it was before she ever started taking medication.)

there is no interchangable drug available for wellbutrin XL. for wellbutrin in other various dosages bupropion (ack spelling). wellbutrin xl 150 mg or wellbutrin XL 300 mg share the same generic name but there is no generic brand to dispense.
