instead of using the shock collar try getting a spary collar, they work great and dont hurt the dog, they just spray a citrus sent in the dogs face.

Most of the time all it takes to stop a dogs barking is to divert it's attention, and this can be done in any number of ways.
Most of my dogs will be in kennel runs, and we have a cat that loves to go watch the dogs. You can probably guess the result (ever hear 30 Beagles light up??)
I have an intercom between the house and the kennels, and all it takes to quiet the dog is to key the intercom which makes a noise when it is keyed.
Years ago my parents had a tin can with some rocks in it hung above the dog runs and a string that ran to the back porch of the house. Jerk on the string and it was instant quiet dogs.
My only complaint with a bark collar is that a dog will quicklly become "collar wise", and will even know when the battery goes dead.

Here you have people telling you to throw water on a dog or hit him with a newspaper and you are worried about a shock collar that only your dog controls? There are no absolute methods to make the dog stop barking, except for the collar. They are a wonderful invention and if you ever try one on your self you will see that they are not what people say they are. I have used them for years and it has kept my dogs quiet when nothing else worked.
PS. Tom that was a great answer, but, I don't want to get up and hit buttons in the middle of the night. And for the other poster here, the whole reason behind the collar, in this case, is to have the dog become collar wise so he stops barking when it's on. They work wonders when you have neighbors who insist on quiet.

You can also by a collar that delivers a shot of citrus to the dog's nose when it barks. Less aggressive on the dog.

Is he an outside dog? The most humane method that's worked for me is throwing water on him. We had a chocolate lab that insisted on barking at night, and my dad talked to a breeder who told him to fill a pitcher with ice water (in the summer, of course! Don't want to make him sick!) and throw it on him after you've told him to hush and he doesn't. After 3 times, Deuce totally stopped the night barking. Maybe that will work for you!

Try the collar it will help them learn quickly and it really doesn't hurt that bad. I made sure to try one on myself before i would let my dog wear one. It no worse than getting a spanking as a kid.

My parents have a lab puppy- actually, she's a grown dog now- that they had to deal with that with.
As with any other undesirable behavior, the word 'No!' is a good training tool. You might even want to crate her at night, and keep a fly swatter or a rolled-up newspaper to hit the kennel with, if you need reinforcement.
