Supposedly Scientology breaks down to mean "knowing how to know"... though you're right, it does seem intentionally deceptive.

Good question. I'm not familiar with "Intelligent Design" as a concept/theory, but I am very familiar with Scientology.
It's name was definitely not chosen with an intent to confuse people , but it did fall into the area of religion simply because it was based or founded on extensive research and discoveries made about the nature and potential of the human spirit. And that it what it is concerned with and addresses.
There may well be some similarities between this Intelligent Design concept and some of Scientology's theology ( I would have to study up on it to compare), but
if so these would still be coincidental and not an attempt to "dress it up" as something other than what it actually is.
The definition of SCIO as "knowledge" or "knowing" and LOGOS as "study of" applies exactly to the name of the religion, Scientology. And is not an attempt to do anything but describe it or call it what it actually is.

No. Its because its derived from a twisted form of science. It was never meant to be a religion but kind of evolved into it as it started to convert more people.
