I arrive next Monday. Am I allowed to go on NHS? Is there a waiting period? Can anyone tell me anything about it?

When in UK if you are working here and paying income tax [PAYE = pay as you earn] you will probably also be paying NI contributions = National Insurance Contributions. You will also get a National Insurance Number = Social Security Number in the States. You will be a fully signed up member of the National Health from day one of paying contributions into it.

What do NI contributions entitle you to? Free healthcare at point of need. You only pay for prescriptions [a charge of about £5 something per item] but consultations and hospitalisations etc are all free. You will also be able to get help if you become unemployed and are looking for work. Your local job centre will arrange for you to receive Job Seekers Allowance. This is only about £50 per week. You also get other help in finding work such as joining the Job Club etc.

Welcome to Britain.

Depends on the circumstances you are arriving under.

If you are starting a job here then you will at some point be required to pay NI contributions this forms part of your entitlement.

I am not sure of the exact sequence of events but if you are planning to arrive to go to hospital for treatment as you have heard it is free. This is incorrect. Emergency service in life or death situations will be provided but general treatment will be charged. Hospitals have a set of tariffs I do not know if these tariffs are national.

On the basis you are arriving here to live and work then the company you work for can give you some advice.

You will need to register with a doctor near to where you are going to live.

If you are arriving without the right documents you will find yourself outside the system and almost inevitably, on the streets, with thousands of others who have come seeking work having been misled by our deceitful politicians.

There is a massive shortage of housing in many parts of the country, typically in the areas where most people think it will be easiest to find work. Rents are extortionate with many low paid foreign workers forced to share one room in a house or flat.

There is work for those with skills but exploitation awaits many of those who arrive without work, a place to live and the correct legal paperwork.

If you are in the later category please think again.

You do not join, treatment is given according to need and priority etc. As long as you pay tax and national insurance contributions all will be ok.

Health tourism is frowned upon, though. It should be forbidden but politicians are in a mess over the whole NHS.

No. You have to have lived in the UK for a certain lenght of time before you are entitled to NHS treatment. In the meantime you will probably be charged for any medical treatment you receive.

If you have emigrated to the UK and are a citizen you can join on day one, there is no charge and you can receive treatment immediately.

You don't have to join anything. everyone in this country is entitled to free healthcare just by being a human being.

Something we should be very proud of.
