I'm thinking of taking the Great Western Night Riviera sleeper train from London to Penzance. What's it like?

There will be four of us in total. My wife and I, and our daughters, one who is 16, the other 5.

Good idea. Its quite nice, comfy and and very smooth. I usually take it to Edinbrough. It leaves around mid night and arrive early in the morning, but they will let you sleep until around 6+ in the morning.

You have to get into the train at around 22 hrs. You will love it. Since you are four the compartments suit you well.

Assuming you go standard class rather than first there will be 2 people to each compartment - so that's handy in your case.
You will each get a properly made-up bed in an air conditioned compartment. Toilets and washing facilities down the corridor - tea/coffee and biscuits served before arrival.
Good way of saving time on your journey.
