I am a 17-year-old black male. Growing up I used to be light brown-skinned from being in the sun a lot. I would like to have some special tips on what I can use to lighten my skin besides exfoliation because I already use that. I don’t want to use any actually skin lightening products; I just want to get back to my normal skin colour like my brothers.

The best thing for you to do is to wear a high SPF sunblock every day. The sun is so harsh these days that no matter what your skin colour you can still get burnt, which will cause your skin to deepen in shade. Pigmentation may also be causing your skin to appear darker than you’d like it to look. So called ‘whitening’ and ‘lightening’ products are badly named because they are not actually designed to whiten or lighten the skin they are meant to even up skin tone. So if you had some darker patches and some lighter patches to your skin, these products would work to eventually even it all up to one colour. So you could try lightening products, the best ones I know of are from Clinique and Shiseido.

Other than that I really think the sunscreen is your best bet. Also though, think how many millions of dollars are spent by people trying to look as tanned and deep in colour as possible – you’re lucky, you already have the most sought after shade!
