I know there are several types of insomnia. I also had the kind where you wake up during the night. I went to a sleep clinic and they gave the following advice:
1. Get regular exercise.
2. Keep regular sleep hours every night.
3. Try not to eat for at least 2 hours before going to bed.
4. If you do wake up and really think you can't get back to sleep, get up, do something for a little while (I used to vacuum the house) or you could read a book or something, then try going back to sleep.

Hope this helps.

I think that the most important thing you can do to help yourself sleep is to keep a consistent sleep schedule. i.e. do not try to go to sleep at 11 and wake up at 7 on weekdays and then go to sleep at 2 and wake up at 11 on weekends. Your body has an internal clock and it's much easier if it knows when to start winding down every day.

Other than that, you can try getting some more exercise throughout the day, this always helps with sleep. And if all else fails, look into some herbal supplements, such as Schizandra Dreams. Works very well and is non habit forming.

NEVER use sleeping pills!
