I am out of the house between 07:30 and 14:00 monday, 07:30 and 17:30 tuesday - thursday, and home all day friday to sunday. I also have 2 cats wandering about the house. I could keep the dog outside during the day as I have a large fenced yard. In the family there is me and my husband, and our 14yo son. Would this be fair on the dog or is there a more suitable breed for my situation?

My yard is at the back of the house so therefore away from road and out of view of public. I also live in a quite rural area on the edge of a small village.

A collie is going to be a big dog and as a herder they have a lot of energy. If you plan on such a large energetic dog you need to walk it twice a day for about 1/2 each time. You shouldn't leave if in the yard during the day because herder dogs are barkers and are very restless. My dog i is a border collie and she is watching for movement all the time. If people walk by she barks and runs and tries to chase them etc. If the dog is out all day and bored they may start to dig.
Maybe you should try for a smaller quieter dog and housetrain it and leave it in the house with the cats to play with. You have a lot of pets.

It really depends on the dog. I have an English Shepherd and he does well in the backyard. He does bark if people get to close to my yard(I have a Chain link fence) but mostly he just stands watching them to make sure they dont get to close.

Although Border Collies, Aussies, and English shepherds are alot like a Rough Collie there are some big differences. Rough Collies have very little herding instinct.

Apparently you have to constantly brush them as well.

Rough collies are laid back and good family pets although they do require a good deal of brushing and bathing is a chore. They'll prefer to be indoors during the summer with the AC on but otherwise enjoy being outdoors.
I would definitely check petfinder.com or the CCA's rescue page http://www.collieclubofamerica.org/rescue.php to find an older pup that would fit your situation.

go to the shelter as a family ... explain your situation to them and they will help you find the right match for you and your family....save a life...if you are set on a collie then look up local rescues in your area... your local vets usually have a breed specific rescue list....good luck in your search...smile

EDIT: OK....so we have some haters out there rating thumbs down to informative answers.....just so sad.....

To the haters: go outside smell the fresh air, listen to the birds a chirpin', dance in the rain, hug your loved one, smile at a stranger, watch a feel good movie, do something, anything....just hope you haters have a better day so you feel you don't have to go rating answers badly without really caring what the person said or knew or how much research they did to help out the person that asked the question.......big hug to ya...smile
