This will prolly make most laugh but I am trying to build physical strength. My fella put me up a pull up bar but I cant even manage one pull up!!! Sniff! What is the best way to get strong enough for this bar? Its very frustrating! Incidentally, why is it that women find pull ups and press ups so hard when men find it so easy?? Are we really totally incapbable of training to be as strong? If so, why? Surely it cant all be hormones!!

You have to very slowly build up to it. Push-ups, bicep curls, and lat pull are all good to help just as the people before me said. To get better at the actually pull ups you just have to keep working on them. When I was younger and still living at home my brother put a pull up bar on the door to his room. Everytime I walked by it I would attempt pull ups.... This makes it more of a game with yourself rather than having ot set aside a time to work on pullups. You will end up working on them several times a day and not really feel like your doing a lot of work. Even if it is as slow as getting half way up to the bar, doing a half pull up several times a day will eventually lead to a full pull up and so on, My starting point was 1, after a few weeks went by I was doing 10 in a row. Also for beginners your grip should have your fingers facing towards your body, not away....its a little easier that way. Good luck!

Actually, the best way is to use the lat pulldown machine. Use a strength training protocol (reasonably low reps high weight) for the latissimus dorsi. When you can pull a weight that is approximately equal to your weight, you are ready to try pullups.

This is the method that I have used to get many women and men to do pullups.

i cant do one either...and ive been going to the gym for the past 2-4 yrs (almost religiously) but the best mchine for u to use to build up this muscle is the lateral pull down (where u pull a bar down to almost ur lap or mid chest level) u can adjust the weight to be anywhere from 5-150 lbs on most machines

being a woman doesnt mean you are weak, have you never seen female power lifters there stronger than loads of men, yoou probably havent ever trained or used your muscles try doing some light weights and build your muscles im sure you'll be able to do a few push ups and pull ups before long

start with lady push ups, on the knees, then manly ones, on the toes

u'll build up strength in no time and get on that bar

also, in answer to the WHy question, men have a higher muscle to weight ratio. i.e we have (normally in healthy males) more muscle per pound of our weight then an equally healthy woman. and yes, this is to do with hormones and what they tell the thyroid to do to make us grow

Great suggestions you got from everyone.

All I can add is; have your fella help you out by "lifting" you from your waist as you make your effort to go up. Slowly and with time you will need less assistance till you are able to do them yourself.
This way you will have so time together!

You will be up there in no time.

doing bicep curls will half help toward doing a pull up on a bar...as the bar utilises both your bicel and your back muscles to achieve the action......just keep trying to do one...and before you know it you will be able to do one...then two then ten!...unfortunately hormones do affect your ability to build muscle...but good exercise, diet (eating well!!!...not eating nothing) and rest makes you stronger!

its not male versus female or strength. breathe deep through your nose taking in a good lungfull as you do that lift your knees toward your groin then hold the breath and knee position for 10 seconds. exhale and lower knees down. repeat as many times as you can.
