When somebody would chew gum in class when I was in junior high, the teacher would say "the only difference between you chewing that gum and a cow chewing its cud is the intelligent look on the cow's face!" I think that pretty much sums it up.

I watch E! from time to time, and so many of the young stars chew gum with their mouths gaping open. Britney Spears, especially, comes to mind. Don't they realize how unattractive it makes them look, how vapid?

To the person below me. "realise" is the English spelling of the word. I think we Americans are the only ones who spell it "realize."

The look doesnt matter ,itz the effects that matter ...
i heard that while u chew chewing gum ... itz gud to keep ur mouth open n chew but not in a way the cow chews ...chewing gum exercises ur teeth and there is a disadvantage connected to it ... when u chew gum HCl acid is produced in the stomach n if u chew gum alot then the stomach will think that food is coming down for it to digest so it prepares itself by producing the HCl acid which can cause ulcers everytime it is produced and no food to be digested is found so well if u go to see it is not so good to chew gum ... and as for the matter of looks that is moronic looks ...yeah if u chew chewing gum with ur mouth wide open then ur statement is correct ... i mean why would people be called people if they chew like cows? try this out ... put a person and a cow together and give the person a chewing gum and the cow some grass ... lol ... record ur observations n i will b correct ..u ll see

I don't chew chewing gum, but I don't think it looks moronic when people do it.
As for 'common' well what is wrong with the common person?
I would rather be in a room with someone chewing chewing gum, than in a room with someone smoking a cigarette, a pipe, or a cigar.
And as some people chew chewing gum in order to give up smoking there is nothing feeble minded about them doing it.
A moron is someone with a low IQ, it is not their fault, and using the term as a form of insult, is an extremely insensitive form of abuse, against such people.

Depends on the person and how they chew their gum, really. If they have a humongous wad of bubble gum and they're chewing with their mouth open, blowing bubbles, cracking their gum, etc., then yes--they look moronic and common. If they have a very small piece of gum (Orbit or Dentyne, for example) and they're very quietly and unobtrusively chewing with their mouth closed (to freshen their breath, perhaps), then no--I don't think they look moronic at all.

How the hell does chewing gum make people look moronic? Have you never chewed it? Course you have, which must make you look a complete moron.
Don't wish to insult you but you are, by this very, extremely stupid question, insulting youself.
Ever chewed on a burger or chips? A takeaway? God you really look moronic doing that.

I disagree. I've never in all my life saw someone chewing gum & thought "Wow! That person looks like a complete moron!!" I'm not that big a fan of gum but I do occasionally have a piece & don't give what other people think a second (or even first) thought.

It depends on how they chew it! If they do it with their mouth open then they are going to look a bit moronic. I chew chewing gum as a way of keeping my teeth healthy, and my breath fresh. I do it with my mouth closed though!

The really sad thing is that the most socially inept, completely low IQ people I met would not DREAM of smoking, but let their half wit children rudely, loudly, and obnoxiously pop, chew with mouth open, and otherwise drive insane pleasant people with gum chewing.
I am no snob, but BLECH.
A gobsmack would be considered in self defense if it were any worse.

There are many variety's of chewing the "chewer" can display while having gum in their mouth. From barely noticeable to outright annoying. It all depends on the person.
It is moronic to make a generalized statement as if it were fact, when indeed, it is only a persons opinion (in this case, yours).

I wouldnt say it makes people look moronic unless they chew it really common with their mouths open etc. I chew gum occasionally because I love the taste, it makes my breath smell great and if you chew sugar free gum it is actually good for you, especially if you are dieting as it fools your stomach into thinking you are eating and thereby prevents hunger pangs. Great for your teeth too, so thumbs up for chewing gum from me! Sorry!
