my first time lasted 45 min. and it wasn't as great as i thought it would be. like i've done it better myself. so my question is was he bad? or is the whole thing not as great as they say it is?

45 minutes your first time, seemed like forever. Yes there was alot of pain, and of course, maybe neither one of you's knew what you were doing. Dont think because this being your first time doing "it" was awful, think of the experience it will take to make you both happy. Enjoy the most of it, cause later down the road you may end up with Mr. Jiffy Pop, what I mean by that, is 3 minutes and their done, and you'll think WHAT?

Well it all depends. First of all nothing is bad. We all need to be taught. Have you had cooking lessons on how long to boil an egg.. If not then it is not your fault so don't take it personal. It really only take 3 to 10 minutes depending how you like the texture.
"Is the whole thing as great as they say it is"? Well that depends if you like it. If you don't then get another hobby. Or get yourself an experienced teacher.

Good or bad is not a time sensitive thing. It can be great and only last a few minutes or it can be awful and last forever. The bottom line is did you enjoy it?
And if your first time wasn't comlpetely terrible, you're ahead of the game.

I don't know how old you are but I can tell you now, it ain't all it's cracked up to be. And I don't know anyone who has a first time story that says it was wonderful. I think all first times are bad.

I agree with Sharon M i don't think anyone's first time is that great. But trust me when you are with someone you love and plan to be with forever, it gets better each time.

its different the first time for every one he might not be bad you both just need to know how each other likes it and you will be fine
