Smile, laugh, point to things, act things out - if you are both committed to understanding each other, you can find a way to communicate. Having a dictionary (I like the Berlin pocket dictionaries) helps when you get stuck.

point at things, use the few words the other person knows .. u will find a way, my sister's housemaid doesnt speak english so i have real issues with her .. but i point n say a few words n she gets it !!
