I found a gas station near my house that sells the best maple walnut cookies. They are full of walnuts and taste like maple syrup. I'd rather make them than buy them but I need a great recipe. The cookies they sell are large, thick, dense, not quite crisp around the outside and almost fudgy in the center.
If anyone has a recipe that they've tried I'd really appreciate it.

Maple-Walnut Chippers

2-1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter or margarine, at room temperature
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 egg
1/2 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped
12 ounces (2 cups) semi-sweet chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter, sugars, maple syrup, and egg. Add the dry ingredients, then mix until blended. Stir in the nuts and chocolate chips. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheets, spacing well apart. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until cookies are golden brown. Cool for a few minutes on the sheets, then remove cookies to a cooling rack.

Maple-Walnut Cookies

1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup maple sugar*
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon strong maple flavor
1/2 cup vegetable shortening (I used Trans fat free crisco)
1 large egg
1/4 cup maple syrup
3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
2 cups chopped walnuts, toasted (Don't skip toasting them!)

Preheat the oven to 375

Line 2 baking sheets with parchment or Lightly Grease

In a bowl, beat together the sugars, baking soda, salt, maple flavor, and shortening. Beat in the egg and maple syrup, then stir in the flour. Fold in the nuts gently - the dough may be pretty stiff.

Break off small sized pieces of dough (about table tennis sized) and rolls into balls. Place on the prepared baking sheets.

Bake for 10-12 minutes until they are golden brown. Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

If you would like a crispy cookie, flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar.

*If you don't have access to maple sugar - you can substitute brown sugar. It will bring a different taste to the cookie but pretty close to what this is.

Store these frosted cookies between layers of parchment paper or wax paper to keep them from sticking together. You can bake and freeze the cookies up to a month in advance; bring the cookies to room temperature before frosting them.

Cookies:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (about 6 3/4 ounces)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/4 cup butter, softened
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 large egg

Frosting:
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 tablespoon fat-free milk
2 teaspoons butter, softened

Remaining ingredient:
1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts, toasted

Preheat oven to 350°.
To prepare cookies, lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Combine flour and next 6 ingredients (through cloves) in a medium bowl, stirring well with a whisk.

Place brown sugar and 1/4 cup butter in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at high speed until light and fluffy (about 4 minutes). Add 2 tablespoons syrup and egg; beat until well blended. Beating at low speed, gradually add flour mixture; beat just until combined.

Spoon batter evenly into 30 mounds (about 1 tablespoon) 2 inches apart on baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 14 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool on pans 5 minutes. Remove from pans; cool completely on wire racks.

To prepare frosting, combine powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons syrup, milk, and 2 teaspoons butter, stirring with a whisk until smooth. Spread frosting evenly over cooled cookies. Working quickly, sprinkle cookies with nuts.
