to the chain link fence or does it have to be buried?

The answers are covering two types of "electric" fence.....
One type is such as used to contain livestock -the uninsulated wire carries a light charge and will "get" anything that touches it it must be a dedicated wire held away from the fence by insulators. Make sure you do NOT use the "weedburner" type charger - it cna burn an animal as small as a dog. The other is a insulated wire that carries a signal that will trigger a box on dogs collar. This is the one usually buried. It will work attached to the fence but, as has been pointed out, is then more subject to lightening strike and other damage....

I have a chain link fence across the back of my property and the company didn't attach it to the fence but just layed it 6 inches away from the fence. The rest of the fence is buried.
Also I was told that they would not directly attach it to the fence just in case the fence was ever hit by lightning it would not blow the fench out. Something to think about.

As another has said. you need to run a dedicated "hot" wire, insulated from the chain link fence.
Run the hot wire on two levels - one close to the ground and the other (if he is a fence jumper) near the top.

For the person who thinks the dog will be electrocuted - the shock is very small and wont hurt or damage the dog. I have used them myself - specially with dogs who pull washing off the line. They usually only have to touch it once or twice and they learn not to do it again.

Put a sign up on the fence stating it is electric.

From the safety point I feel that you should get expert advise on this one. You dont' want anyone else getting an elcetric shock. And I feel that this is a drastic measure to take to alleviate your problem, your dog does not deserve to get electric shock treatment - what about putting up a fence that he cannot get through there are many attactive garden features so it does not have to look like an eyesore.

you need to run a dedicated wire around the perimeter of your chainlink-use ceramic insulators to hold it in place-it'll be the "hot". Your dog'll provide the "ground". But only once or twice, cause they learn fast!
