Paul was carrying out Jesus’ instructions given to his disciples when he said: “In this way it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from among the dead on the third day, and on the basis of his name repentance for forgiveness of sins would be preached in all the nations—starting out from Jerusalem, you are to be witnesses of these things.” (Luke 24:46-48) Paul taught more than the ransom sacrifice of Jesus Christ, on the basis of which we may receive God’s forgiveness of our sins through our repentance toward him. He also preached God’s kingdom, in which Jesus Christ will be God’s anointed King and for which Jesus taught his disciples to pray to God: “Let your kingdom come. Let your will come to pass, as in heaven, also upon earth.” (Matt. 6:10)

That the Messiah should suffer . . . : Luke is the only New Testament writer to speak explicitly of a suffering Messiah (Luke 24:26, 46; Acts 3:18; 17:3; 26:23). The idea of a suffering Messiah is not found in the Old Testament or in other Jewish literature prior to the New Testament period, although the idea is hinted at in Mark 8:31-33.

The promise of the Father is the Holy Spirit.

Peace and every blessing!

SOME of the other answerer's have it correct about Him on the cross, and for those who say it is not mentioned in the Old Testament, the very first Prophecy in the Bible is Genesis 3:15 and that states it also, BUT one must read WITH understanding. It is ALL THROUGH the Word of God, and for another example they can read Psalm 22. It is called the Death Psalm. If one would take 2 Bibles and open it to that Psalm and open the other one to the account of Christ being Crucified it would be almost word for word. The 23rd psalm is the Resurrection Psalm also., AND BOTH of the Psalms ARE IN the Old Testament. Also in Psalm 40:7, it STATES that the VOLUME OF THE BOOK, (the Bible) is WRITTEN Concerning ME. (Christ) and Hebrews 10:7 in the New Testament.

I'm not sure what you mean, is it hard to understand?

Luke 24:46-48
And he said to them, So it is in the Writings that the Christ would undergo death, and come back to life again on the third day; And that teaching about a change of heart and forgiveness of sins is to be given to Jerusalem first and to all nations in his name. You are witnesses of these things.

He was telling the disciples that He had fulfilled the prophecy of the Old Testament (the Writings). He told them that the change of heart and the forgiveness of sins (His most basic of messages to us) was first to be preached in Jerusalem and then in the rest of the world.

Am I missing a hidden meaning somewhere? Seriously, I saw this as pretty obvious, but maybe I'm missing something.

In the Bible, it says, "44He (Jesus) said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."

45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

It means that a) Jesus gave them understanding (which still happens today. When a person does not believe in Jesus, it is because they do not understand, and they cannot SEE. Jesus opens up a person's understanding). b) He then told them what would happen to him - suffering and his death on the cross, and that He would rise up again, c) the disciples would begin to preach forgiveness of sins to the world, but would start with Jesus' own people - the Jews.

I hope this helps my friend!

Christ to suffer and to rise: Two parts of God's plan had been fulfilled. Jesus had been crucified and raised from dead.

Jesus had been considered a pretender and a blasphemer. After His Resurrection, people had to change their minds and serve Him for who He really is, the Son of God. This is the message Paul would preach at Pentecost, a message that would result in thousands of people declaring Jesus as their Lord.

Remission of sins: The content of the disciples' preaching would center of God's gracious offer of forgiveness to all who would believe.

In His name: This is the reference to Jesus' authority. The disciples' mission would begin in Jerusalem where Jesus died; from there, it would spread out into the entire world.

Witnesses: Jesus pointed out that the disciples were to testify His work.

I always thought that missionaries and ministers etc had the responsibility to be disciples of Jesus and spread the the Word of god and tell what Jesus did for us. But we are asked to do that. So we all need to pick up our cross and go to share the Gospel, good news about Jesus who loves us. : )

Just commenting on a single thing: Christians need to preach the Good News of salvation to the whole world

2 Cor 4:13, But having the same spirit of faith, according to that which is written, I believed, and therefore did I speak; we also believe, and therefore also we speak

Better to start with 45
45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.

This is the foundation for the Church Age. Pentecost

Jesus is talking about how the gospel would be preched in all the world (which is exactly what has happened) also that God would send the Holy Spirit as a comforter and guide. This is recorded in Acts 2.

He was telling his disciples that he dying on the cross and suffering then rising again on the third day was all part of God's plan. That the disciples are to go and preach repentance and remission of sins to all people, for they had witnessed it all first hand.

The meaning for us is that Christ died on the cross to pay for our sins and that we as Christians need to spread the word to others.
