With the death of the Prophet (pbuh) there was a void as to who would now lead the faithful and be head of state. This would lead to Islamic political theories of the Khilafat and Imamat. The Khalafat is the term or title for the Islamic leader of the Ummah, or community of Islam, to mean successor to the prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It is believed that when the Prophet died he did not leave instructions as to how the Muslim community should be governed after his death. This raised the question as to who would be the successor and how much power he would have. The clan and tribal leaders thought is would be best if the new leader would be chosen by election as leaders had been in their past, they became known as Sunni, or orthodox. This caused a rift in the Islamic community, Imamat, with those who though only the blood relatives of the Prophet should lead the faithful. These followers are called the Shii, or supporters, for they are the supporters of Ali (pbuh) the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet. The first of the Khalafat was Abu Bakr (pbuh) 632-634 CE; he had been one of Muhammad’s father-n-laws. With his guidance the Quran was placed into text. He moved the Islamic influence into Syria and established a council to elect future leaders before he died of old age. Abu Bakr (pbuh) was followed by Omar (pbuh), 634-644 CE, who was able to gain full control of Syria. BY 640 CE he was able to defeat the Persian army in Iran and Iraq. He would be assonated in 644. He was succeeded by Othman (pbuh), 644-656 CE. Othman (pbuh) standardized the Quran and distributed it throughout the growing Islamic empire. He was also able to move influence into Egypt before he too was assonated by rebellious soldiers. He was followed by Ali (pbuh) 656-661; whom the Shii believed to be the true leader of the faithful. He was married to Muhammad’s (pbuh) daughter Fathama. Many believed that he should have done more to find the men who had assonated Othman (pbuh). Throughout his rule there was civil unrest. This would lead to his death. When Ali (pbuh) was able to make a truce rather then win against the governor of Syria, Mu’awiya, some of his supporters left him. This group would be called the Kharijites. He would be later assonated by a member of this group while praying for peace. After the death of his father Hasan ibn Ali tried to gain control. But after being defeated by Mu’awiya he retired to Medina to live as an Imam. This left way for Mu’awiya to create the first dynasty of Umayyad 661-750 CE, followed by the Abbasides 750-1248 CE, and the Ottomans 1453-1921 CE. Although the Prophet did not leave a guide as to how to select leaders for the faithful there were laws handed down by God and the Sunnah to show the faithful the straight path.

In Islam all over the world They agree about the oneness of God They follow the same book - Quran(same words and letters all over the world). They follow the same prophet Muhammad . offer their prayers five time a day. fast in the month of Ramadan.Give charity (Zakat) which is the poor-due on the wealth of the rich go for hajj, pilgrimage to Mecca ...but they may have differnt opinions not on the basics
Those who follow some sayings and views of Ali (one of the early muslims leaders), as the rightful successor to Prophet Muhammad , are called Shia. Shia means a partisan (party of Ali) and it started more as a political party to help Ali in his conflict with his political adversaries.
About 90% of Muslims are Sunni, the word Sunni is based on the word Sunnah which is an Arabic word means the Prophet's Doctrine. Sunnis believe in (GOD) as the One Creator and Mohammad is His last and final Messenger.
but you have to know that the sects in islam not like the sects in other religions in other religions1- they can change in their books for example the Catholic Bible contain 73 books while the Protestant Bible has only 66 in Islam no one can change any thing There is not even one word of difference between two Arabic Qur'ans, anywhere in the world. There has been no disagreements in history among Muslims as to what should and should not be in the Qur'an
The Sunnah or Hadith consists of the teachings, sayings, and actions of Prophet Muhammad. This information was meticulously reported and collected by his Companions. It is essentially an elaboration of the Qur'anic verses that shows how they are to be implemented in one's daily life ALLthe true muslims agree about that

Pls. Visit Muslim web sites or Wikipedia for further detail.
Sunny and Shiite are only two different 'school of Thoughts' in the same faith and belief - Islam.
Please do not consider on Catholics & Protestants because - both follow the same Quran, prophet Muhammad and his teachings. We Sunny differ with Shiite in the matter of Imam (Caliph/leader) - as to who is the first religious Leader after the prophet Muhammad(p.b.u.h). A majority of Muslims accepted "Abu Bakar" as their first leader since he was the closest companion of the prophet but some muslims were in favour of "ALI" - another companion and Son-in-Law of the prophet Muhammad.
This difference did not appeared in the life-time of all the four companions but later on (after 30-40 years time)this difference was politicised by a small group of Muslims.
Sunny still dominently represent 90 - 95 % of the nation all over the world.
Peace & Blessings for all.
believe in same one God, one messenger

Well any Muslim knows the difference you don't need a "senior Muslim" and we don't have any "senior Muslims" anyway. We don't have leaders or superiors. We have people who are more knowledgeable than others and are called Imam's but we don't refer to them as "senior". The term Sunni means to follow the Sunnah which all Muslim are supposed to do, Sunni is not a sect although people with no knowledge all assume it is. All Muslims who study the Quran and Sunnah are by definition Sunni. As Muslims we are not to separate and put ourselves into sects this is against the teachings of the Quran. Those who do put themselves into sects like Shiite are doing so because they believe there are certain factors and celebrations which should be recognized, which Sunni do not.
