It's done in tattoo studios. It does however fall into a grey area of the law in most places (or is outright illegal in some), so finding an artist can be difficult. Most studios don't advertise this service, and only offer it to people they know. www.bmezine.com is a good place to start looking for an artist in your area. Be sure to check out an artists portfolio for fresh and healed work before you make a decision.

You can have the cleanest establishment ever but that does not mean you will get this service. For the most part, scarification is not included under tattoo laws so those studios that obey the law will not offer these services to you.

Edit notes:

There are many elements to doing a really fine job at scarification. Those who "dabble" in it generally don't understand what it takes to create scar tissue on purpose and have it look good. If there is an ordinance or law against it, you can be sure that the reputable studios will not be touching it. Most are plenty busy doing what they are licensed to do - tattooing. I personally like needle scarification and that is certainly an involved process but I don't know if this will be allowed in Illinois once the rules are in place.

My friend had no trouble getting scarification from 2 out of 2 tatoo shops. When she has discussed this it never sounded like any big deal to the artists. To tell you the truth that popular TV tatoo shop in Miami.....they did a horrible job and were total jerks and charged her $450, down from $900, for an awful rendition of a 2" x 2" dragon fly. It looks like my neighbor's kid drew it. So don't go there for your scarification!

Hi there,

Yes, scarification is done mostly at tattoo parlours. However, not all tatoo artistis are trained to provide such service. You will need to check out a variety of spots and inquire as to which staff, if any, can do it for you. You are going to want to check out spots anyway to see which places you feel comfie with and to check out how clean the establishment is. If you get a bad vibe from a particular store then chances are you are going to want to find an alternative. With any type of body modifications, making sure that the establishment follows proper safety guidelines, to me, is manditory!

Cheers.
