The human mind is designed to believe in something. A belief is a set of assumptions upon which we operate on a day to day basis. Without belief of some sort, we would find it difficult to function.
There is nothing, however, that compels people to believe that there is a God. I don't know what exactly you mean by "God," of course, since you didn't supply any information, but I'm going to risk making the assumption that you refer to the singular creator God of the Jews, Christians and Muslims. I will stick out my neck a bit further and guess that you specifically refer to the Christian one.
I don't believe in that God.
I believe that there is a spiritual component to human existence. I believe that as we are constituted in terms of our neuro-biology, we cannot comprehend the nature of that spiritual component.
Things that we cannot comprehend make us anxious, and we attempt to relieve that anxiety by creating some sort of understanding. Given the limited capacity we have to understand the spiritual component, we create for ourselves a limited "God," one whom we can manipulate with prayer and "good behavior" and sacrifice.
It doesn't work, but that is no obstacle to our belief. We need to understand, so we create an understandable God and invest all our belief in that.
What happens, ultimately is that we encyst a spiritual experience in a nutshell of dogma, thus suffocating the spirit. Our religions are too small to contain "God."

I am free thinker, and do believe there is a Higher being. Just not the one Christians portray.
On another level, I even question myself because I can not believe in a "God" who SAYS he loves all his children, that lets "his" children be raped, molested, tortured, negleted, and left hungry, among other cruelties.
I don't want someone who loves me like that....
Then Christians try to justify it, saying that its the adults fault, and they are choosing the wrong path.....
UMMMMMM...What about the children? I could go on and on.......

I am what you might call a "free thinker" but that doesn't mean doesn't mean i don't believe in a god.
I do, but i don't believe in a (overly) interfering god(one that involves him/herself with our world alot), i believe that the world depends on how we act, not what a god says.
I don't believe in the beliefs of most religions. What I am saying is that the values most religions live by are very moral, but I do not believe what's written in most holy books because any of them might be written by some random gu who called it "god's holy word"
have a good day

Polytheisic Gods existed for thousands of years, then along came monotheism. We've had that for a couple of thousand years. We are reducing our Gods as time goes by - soon we will have none.
There is no God. That's why I don't believe in him.
Why don't you believe in purple people eaters? Because they don't exist.

Because we see no evidence of the existence of any such being. Believing in something that isn't there is a foolish waste of time and detracts attention from serious problems that are solvable.

First of all, agnostics don't deny the existence of god, they just say it's impossible to know if it exists.
Me? Critical thinking and gut feelings.
