I am looking to drop a few pounds and don't want to lose muscle mass. I am not over weight, just looking to increase speed on bike. I have been reading about whey protein and was wondering of the pros/cons of using a protein supplement? Female 5'10"

Whey protein is a good choice. Make sure that you look for one that is low in sugar, and does not have an artificial sugar substitute in it's place.

Although there are many whey products with creatine (and people swear that creatine is needed during training), I personally stay away from it. I just don't think that there is enough testing on women for me to feel safe about it.

Although whey does come from milk, whey protein does not cause the body any additional mucus. Most people don't notice the mucus when they are working out, or in your case biking, the mucus will make it a bit harder to breathe and will dry out your mouth quicker.

Whey protein will also help your immune system, contains anti-oxidents and can also help to regulate your blood sugar so you will feel less tired and your muscles can repair more quickly.

The only thing that you have to watch out for is consuming too much whey protein. If you take around 150 grams a day you can tax your liver. With the average serving of whey protein coming in at 23-25 grams, you want to keep your daily intake less than 4 servings a day (or around 100 grams or less).

Pro complex is a good one but expensive, wal-mart also has some less expensive one that are good. I had lap-band surgery in Oct., 2006, and I drink at least 2 drinks a day. I use vanilla for the most part then add fruit and blend good. It's delicious and filling. I carry a blender that fits in a glass everytime I go out of town. It says just stir but that doesn't really blend it well.
